Jory Brigham is a California-born artist, designer and builder with a passion for creating – and teaching how to create – lasting works by hand. Growing up among generations of woodworkers and craftsmen, Jory discovered his own creative voice within the family trade at an early age. Today, his work pulls inspiration from decades throughout the twentieth century and can be found around the globe, from New York to Australia, California to Italy, Portugal to New Zealand. Jory’s philosophy of “just make it happen” stems from his belief that the fear of failure inhibits the willingness to try, and in turn, accomplish new things. This is borne out in his own career, in which some of his most impressive creations and tactics evolved from some of his most epic failures. The creative process, for him, is coupled with the intense drive to always be learning and growing. Jory’s view is that when people are too afraid to give something new a shot, they miss the opportunity to flourish.
The Jory Brigham Furniture Workshop, also know as Furniture Camp, offers 8 different courses in all ranging from beginner courses to intermediate courses. Most of these courses run Friday thru half day Sunday with the exception of a couple of the bigger projects. Over the years this concept of offering up an environment for woodworkers of all skill levels to learn woodworking from a non-intimidating, and fun environment has grown into something I did not expect. Although our day to day at the shop is primarily still building furniture for clients, the courses have opened up an opportunity to connect with woodworkers around the world.
I never knew how much I would enjoy teaching, and sharing everything I’ve learned from my father, uncles, peers, and mentors. I believe this style of hands on learning, that came well before YouTube is the key to opening the door to the passion that drives us to keep learning and creating. My goal is to send you off with not only a piece that you build, but with a head full of ideas and mojo to keep it going. To come up with your own designs, your own style and most importantly the confidence and tools of how to do that. Others just want to get away for a weekend and build a piece of furniture for their home or friend and have an experience, and forget about their current job for a few days.
